Place-Keeping

Open Space Management in Practice

By Dr Nicola Dempsey & Jinvo Nam

Place - Keeping  presents the latest research and  practice  on  place - keeping  – that is, the long-term  management  of public and private  open   spaces  – from around Europe and the rest of the world. There has long been a focus in urban landscape planning and urban design on the creation of high-quality public spaces, or place-making.

Sustainability by Dr Nicola Dempsey Ddepartment of Landscape Arcitecture University of Sheffield. Ongoing financial public sector budget pressure is adversely affecting the management and quality of parks in the UK. According to UNISON (2018), 59% of the UK’s local authorities had cut their parks and green spaces budgets between 2016/2017 and 2018/2019. This has led some local authorities to change how their parks services are delivered with fewer staff and an increased focus on lower maintenance.

Have a look at Dr Nicola Dempsey reserch, which looks into the gapes betwen what policy makers and designers say and do. What practicianers and due practic and how the end user experiences the designed places. Nicola Dempsey – YouTube

Problems with Traffic. Carbon emissions:

https://www.sheffield.gov.uk/home/pollution-nuisance/clean-air-zone “Air pollution contributes to 500 deaths a year in Sheffield . The harm done includes lung cancer and cardiovascular disease and stroke. The biggest cause of pollution is transport, especially diesel vehicles. Sheffield has been in breach of the legal limits for Nitrogen Dioxide levels since January 2010.”

Dated 20 th October 2021 Clean Air Zone: Decision on the way as Sheffield City Council sets out pollution plan.

Cllr Douglas Johnson, Executive Member for Climate Change, Environment and Transport said: “Clean air benefits us all and none more so than those who have to drive in it.  It's in our power to reduce air pollution, which means it's in our power to save lives. Air pollution contributes to the early deaths of 500 people every year in Sheffield It particularly affects young children and people with underlying respiratory conditions.”

We will take a bold step towards making the city's air cleaner and safer at a special Co-operative Executive meeting on 26 October 2021 . If the decision passes, we will create a Category C Clean Air Zone, accepting £24million of Government funding to help local drivers upgrade to cleaner vehicles.

Government press release

New laws to guarantee payment for solar homes providing excess electricity

Homes and green businesses generating renewable and low-carbon electricity to be guaranteed money for power supplied to the grid.

Deforestation and Carbon emissions are two of the main causes of Climate Change. We need to help Mother Nature by retaining the green spaces we have and planting more trees upstream.

We need the right houses built in the right places that don't cause flooding downstream

Solar panels & Electric Cars help curb carbon emissions.
